From Transactional Loyalty to Behavioral Engagement: A Data-Driven Framework for Customer Value Creation in Omnichannel Retail

Abstract

Traditional loyalty programs in retail have predominantly relied on transactional mechanisms, rewarding customers based on purchase frequency and monetary value. However, such approaches have become increasingly insufficient in omnichannel retail environments, where customer journeys extend across multiple physical and digital touchpoints and where sustained value creation depends on continuous and multidimensional engagement rather than isolated transactions. Although the existing literature extensively examines loyalty programs and customer retention strategies, limited attention has been given to how behavioral loyalty systems can be systematically designed and operationalized in real omnichannel retail settings through data-driven mechanisms. In particular, the integration of dynamic customer segmentation, incentive structures, and engagement-based interactions remains underexplored in applied contexts.

This study proposes a data-driven framework that reconceptualizes loyalty as a behavioral engagement system. The framework is structured around three core components: dynamic tier-based segmentation, reward-driven incentive mechanisms, and engagement-triggered interactions. The findings indicate that data-driven behavioral loyalty systems can function as strategic mechanisms for guiding customer behavior and enhancing long-term customer value. By bridging the gap between traditional loyalty approaches and behavioral engagement design, the study contributes to the literature on customer loyalty and omnichannel retail management.
